Today I’m going to talk to you about the importance of having a website, no matter how early it is in your career. My best friend Laurie and I work together on my web site for script supervising and also our blog, Moviemaker Central. Everyone knows what it’s like in Hollywood. We work really hard all day long and often just as hard on our day off. I’m very fortunate that Laurie’s genius at this tech stuff because I really don’t know anything about it.
It may sound strange, but I believe that having a website is key to having a career in Hollywood. This isn’t only for acting, but for every career path. Craft, crew, everything. It’s one of the first things that I advise people of when they are looking for work in Hollywood… get a website. It is so much easier to market and promotes yourself when you have a website. It’s a great way to showcase your work and show people your materials all in one place. You just send them a link to your website and your IMDB and that will help you get more and more work. Even for people that don’t have a lot of work history or a lot of stuff on their resumes.
A website was the first thing I set up. I sent it to people and they felt that it was more professional. After Laurie first looked at my website, she said it was a little crazy and like mismatched but she soon got it more organized. It’s so much better now. A lot of people don’t have websites. You know, I would get like maybe two or three jobs a year just from that original website, but also being able to send people to my site when I was applying for work, so many people thought it was cool that I made a little video about script supervising and all this stuff. You see, I don’t really have samples of my work, so doing a little video to show them more like something they thought was really neat.
So my big tip for today is this…having a website and a little video and pictures of yourself up there will really help market any business that you’re doing, especially in the film industry. It kind of sets you apart from a lot of the other people that don’t have their stuff together.
