Body Confidence

One of the most common misconceptions about women in modeling and acting is that in order to have a career and be happy, you have to be really thin. The ultimate size zero. However, one of the things that I’ve realized over the past year or so is that that isn’t strictly true.

If I look back over the photos of the shoots I’ve done I can see how my body shape has changed as my weight has gone up and down. I have photographs where my body is thin and toned, posing on a beach covered in shapes made out of tape. I look amazing in those shots. Then I have photographs where my body is fuller, soft, with rounded curves. And I look amazing in those shots too. That’s not something I can guarantee I would have said ten years ago, but I think I’ve come a long way towards realizing that it’s not about the outward appearance, but also your attitude and how you project yourself.

I have said before that I wasn’t always very comfortable in front of the camera. I was too self-conscious and aware of being filmed and that sometimes made me quite awkward. I’ve blogged before about how modelling has helped tremendously with that because the more time you spend in front of the camera, the easier it gets. Every time I’ve pushed my boundaries in modelling and tried something new, I’ve forced myself to let go of a little more shyness and embraced my body and really learn how to pose to make the most of it. No matter what size or shape it is at the time. Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely body types that get more work in this industry, but truth be told,
there are roles for all of us out there. The secret is to learn to rock what you’ve got. Act confident and it’ll shine through and people will respond to it.
