Clara Bow

Clara Bow was an American actress who was in the industry when the silent films were a big hit. She later on also appeared in various sound films. She had a great personality as well as she had a great appearance. Due to the same reason, she was also known as “The It Girl”. It simply means that the girl had a great personality as well as sex appeal.

All this camera after her great hit called Roaring Twenties. She was also a leading sex symbol for the same reason.

About Clara

She was born on July 29h 1905 in Brooklyn, New York City. She was acting from 1921 till 1933. Her career start was a bit rough just as her childhood. During her life, she faced many tragic incidents. Some people claim that 1907 was her birth year. This was because of the US census. However, the majority of the sources and even Wikipedia claims her birth year to be 1905. Even though she had a great career, her lifestyle was not so famous. She used to visit many studios and agencies to find a role in the film industry.

Film Career

She visited many agencies and studies looking for a role. However, most of them were rejecting her due to her age. Bow also revealed that she was too fat at that time and that was yet another reason why nobody would cast her.

After visiting a lot of studios and agencies, she got finally picked by Director Elmer Clifton. Luckily, at that time, he needed a tomboy. Bow’s personality matched with him. That’s how she got her first film. The movie was Down to the Sea in Ships.

This was when the director saw her in the Motion Picture Classic Magazine. Bow put her hair up and came wearing a dress she sneaked from her mother. Clifton laughed a lot when Bow told her that she was the same girl mentioned in the mag.

After a little chit-chat, Clifton offered $35 a week to Bow. Bow asked for 50 and he agreed.

Thereafter, she appeared in a total of 46 silent films.

In 1929, she got a chance to work in sound films and she even started working on it. The first films she did were The Wild Party, Dangerous Cures, as well as The Saturday Night kid. All the movies were released in the same year.

She then fixed her position in the box office. Because of her sex appeal. She even revealed later on that she didn’t like the talkies movies that much. The main reason was because of the limit they put on. According to her, sound movies focused more on sex appeal rather than acting. This is why the old silent films were the best. She admired Charlie Chaplin and all the other actors a lot due to this.

This was the main reason why she had very few talkies in her career. She only did 11 such movies.
