Well, my mentor, Jim Kelly Durgin told me that in the 80s, a major studio had to cancel two productions because they could not find a great script supervisor.
Jim was actually hired many times by big-budget productions to training someone they wanted to script-supervise. He was a legend before he passed away. He had trained 100s of script supervisors. Many of them went on to do other things in the film industry like one who runs a studio and some are producers, yet others that are actors and crews. Many have become directors.
My editing teacher used to say: If God came down and said, you can only have one—the director or the script supervisor, he would say by the director. Some people like the editor and some producers know how valuable the script supervisor is.
You really don’t know though until you have done the job. I have taught people that have taken the class to enhance their directing, their writing, and their producing.
Now that I know what I did not know for years, I wish I had taken this class as soon as I came out to Hollywood. It would have saved me years of not knowing about the film set. And years of working as a waitress and other odd jobs and I could have started living my dreams sooner. My fear of being on sets and looking like a fool because I didn’t know what was really happening would have been gone and I could have started enjoying my experience in LA sooner rather than later.
This is why I teach a 3-day course on script supervising and it is pretty comprehensive and not even a tenth of the price of film schools or the time. My mentor used to teach it for 3 months for about an hour every day. I shorten that time and made it easier and quicker to learn. My students have worked on sets within days of the training.
