SCRIPT SUPERVISOR

Hi! Charese here with another series of videos. This time the topic is about “Script Supervisor”.

I have been in the industry for a long time now and I have done Production & Direction. In the beginning days I had no idea what a Script Supervisor does. But I was blessed with a mentor as great as Jim Kelly Durgin, he was one of the legends who taught greats like J J Abrams, Steven Spielberg and many others.

So I thought to share the knowledge I have gained to you.

Firstly, script supervisor is a really tough job. You have to read more than 100 pages sometimes just to understand what it actually is. I myself attended multiple classes to understand it.

Dont get tenses about the pages. As there are Daily Logs which contains the shots in a chronological order. I thas dates on them and then you have to follow the sequence of pages for that particular date.

The next thing that the script supervisor is in charge of is Description Pages. It is on the left page or the back page of the shot. It includes all the details regarding that shot. It involves each and every detail from the movement of characters to the movement of cameras. It actually is for Director Photography to keep a track or for a Screen Direction which is really important.

Then comes lines on the Pages. It is Script Supervisors responsibility to see these lines. If they are dark it means which character is looking in the camera. Nowadays there are many cameras so colours are used for lines to keep track of which camera is to be faced.

Now comes the Slate and its labeling. It is most crucial thing for me. If you lose script supervisor notes. Still, you can edit the whole movie with the help of these slates.

Another thing to keep track is of the total time of the picture it is going to be. Apart from that we also look after the time of lunch, wrap up time and start of the shoot time as it helps producers to keep track of pace but also helps us to prepare daily reports etc.

We also keep track of how many hours and pages are done. How many hours and pages are left. We prepare daily reports and submit to 2nd Assistant Director and it takes sometimes 12 to 14 hrs a day.
