Jean Arthur

Jean Arthur was one of the best actresses in Hollywood. As she was in the film industry for a long time, her first films were silent. Later on, she made a transition to regular films. In her career, she has done a lot of different types of films. She was active from 1921 to 1975.

About Jean Arthur

Jean Arthur was born on 17th October in 1900. She was born in Plattsburgh, New York in the United States. She dropped her high school right from the start which was the junior year. She has the reason “Change in family circumstances” when she was leaving the school. Her brother died due to a mustard gas attack.

Jean got married in 1920 and soon after that, she got her first role.

Career

She made her debut in a silent film which was in Silent Film Came Kirby which was directed by John Ford. That was her first film. The production house was new and was looking for actresses with good sex appeals and personality. Luckily, Jean matched all of them and that was the reason why she was cast in the film. That was the start when she got the role. She was remodeled to match the exact personality.

The net film was The Temple of Venus which was also in the same year. This time, it was the lead role. Her acting talent was not that good at first and for the same reason, she was replaced.

After the incident, she was not planning to continue in the film industry. She was planning to leave California but couldn’t leave due to the contract. Therefore, she stayed and did many short roles in the film.

Thereafter, after a couple of roles in the films, her talent got a bit better and the director of the show started liking her.

She played a role in Warming Up which received a lot of appreciation. Due to the same thing, she signed a contract with Paramount Pictures for 3 years. At that time, it was roughly $150 a week.

The Sound Film Career

Later on, in the same decade, the rise of talk films increased. As a result, the studio was converting some of the bright actors and actresses to talkies. At that time, Arthur was one among the people who were selected to do a transition to sound film.

Her acting was surely better but her sound was still not. When she came to know about the transition to sound film, she met her sound coach which made her voice better. In her early talk films, you could still see her old voice which was unclear.

She made a debut with The Canary Murder Case which was her first all-talking film. She faced a lot of hurdles here due to the acting. In her first films, you could early see that she was inexperienced. Even she claimed the same.

Later on, she improved and did a contract with Columbia pictures till 1944. When the contract was completed, she retired.
